Gerard Pique hopes Harry Maguire can transform Manchester United into Premier League title contenders and return the Red Devils to their former glory.
United made the England man the most expensive defender when they paid Leicester £80million earlier this summer, ending their long search for a commanding centre-back.
Some expect the 26-year-old to have a similar impact to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, who single-handedly transformed the Reds’ shaky defence into Europe’s most formidable.
And Pique, the Barcelona star formerly of United, expects big things from Maguire.
“It happened before with Van Dijk and before about ten years ago with Rio Ferdinand,” Pique told the Express.
“Culturally they invest a lot in good defenders and Harry Maguire is a great defender.
“I hope that they can be at the top again.
“Manchester United in the last few years they have been fighting to qualify for the Champions League but they have to be trying to win the Premier League.
“I hope with this signing they can return to the top.”
United will spend this season in the Europa League after finishing sixth last season, and many reckon they’ll compete in a battle for the Champions League spots this term.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.
